▶데뷔 작품 다음으로 촬영했던 작품이다. 거의 첫 작품이다. 저에게 하고자 하는 일의 문을 열어 준 작품으로 기억될 것 같다.
-앞으로 하고 싶은 배역은.
▶저는 극한의 상황에 있는 캐릭터를 하고 싶다. 소설에서는 범죄심리학을 좋아한다. 스릴러에서 감정의 골이 깊은 캐릭터를 해보면 어떨까. 서사가 깊이 있는 캐릭터를 하면 많이 성장 할 것 같다.
-올해 목표는.
▶제가 쉬는 것을 별로 안 좋아한다. 나태해지지 않기 위해 쉬지 않고 열심히 활동하는 게 좋아해주시는 분들에 보답해줄 수 있는 것이라 생각한다. 올 한해 열심히 일 하는게 목표다.

Newcomer Hong Seo-hee, who made her mark with <Alchemy of Souls>, has shared her New Year's greetings for the Year of the Rabbit 2023.
The tvN Saturday-Sunday drama <Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow> (written by Hong Jeong-eun and Hong Mi-ran, directed by Park Jun-hwa) concluded its 10-episode run on the 8th. <Alchemy of Souls> broadcast its 20-episode Part 1 from June to August of last year and Part 2 from December of last year. <Alchemy of Souls> is a fantasy romance where the protagonists, whose fates are twisted by the soul-swapping magic of 'alchemy of souls' in the fictional Daeho Kingdom, overcome their destiny and grow.
Part 1 set its highest viewership rating at 9.3% (based on Nielsen Korea's national paid households) in its 18th episode, and Part 2 broke its own record with 9.7% in the final episode. <Alchemy of Souls> gained popularity with its passionate romance between a man and a woman that transcends not only social status but also body and soul, set in a fantasy nation where 'alchemy of souls' is used.
In the drama, Hong Seo-hee played Heo Yun-ok, the calm and elegant granddaughter of Heo Yeom (played by Lee Do-kyeong). Heo Yun-ok was a character who maintained a devoted heart for Jang Uk (played by Lee Jae-wook) throughout Part 1 and Part 2, and her pure and elegant beauty evoked jealousy from Mu-deok (played by Jung So-min) and Jin Bu-yeon (played by Go Youn-jung).
Hong Seo-hee, who was active in independent films and made her official debut in the Netflix series <The Sound of Magic> last year, showcased stable acting skills as a newcomer in her role as the protagonist ballerina Anna in the KBS 2TV <KBS Drama Special 2022 - Prism>. She then firmly established herself in the mainstream by playing the perfect 'Mrs. Perfect' of the Daeho Kingdom in <Alchemy of Souls>.
We met with Hong Seo-hee, who was beautifully dressed in a traditional hanbok ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, and had a variety of conversations.
- What are your plans for this Lunar New Year holiday?
▶ It doesn't feel like everyone is gathering for the holiday; my family will have dinner together for a day, and I'll go on a short trip with my grandfather. When I look around, it seems like a lot of people are staying in Seoul. When I meet my relatives, a lot of conversations revolve around me. They didn't know I would become an actor, so they support me a lot once they found out. My family are my number one fans. I love that they all support me.
- Do you have any memorable holiday stories?
▶ Since we don't have a large family gathering, there aren't any specific episodes. On January 1st this year, my family just ate rice cake soup together. I love dumplings, so we made and ate dumplings.
- This is the Year of the Rabbit. Have you been told you look like a rabbit?
▶ I've been told I look like a rabbit or a duck a lot. When I don't have bangs, my lips look like a duck's, so I've been told I look like a rubber duck. Haha.
- What were the reactions of the people around you to <Alchemy of Souls>?
▶ In Part 1, I was elegant and devoted, but in Part 2, I turned dark. I was asked if Heo Yun-ok also turned dark because many characters, including the main character Jang Uk, did in Part 2.
- What was the atmosphere on set like?
▶ The actors were all around the same age, so we were comfortable. The senior actors also made me feel at ease. We were close without any distance. We played a lot of pranks with the staff, and our senses of humor matched.
- What's the synchronization rate between you and Heo Yun-ok?
▶ Heo Yun-ok is devoted to one person and has a lot of feminine sides. I have a more easy-going side. I have more of a 'girl crush' vibe than a feminine feel. I'll just say that Yun-ok is a feminine and elegant ideal. Haha.
- Could you elaborate on your 'girl crush' vibe?
▶ People around me often say that I'm easy-going rather than feminine. My hobbies can be a bit old-fashioned; I like hiking. I also like quiet things like reading or traveling alone. I think I'm a bit of a boring person. Of course, I also like hanging out with friends and get a lot of energy from people.
- Were there any actors you became particularly close with in <Alchemy of Souls>?
▶ I became the closest with Jung Ji-an, who played Sun-i. I also became close with In-su (who played Park Dang-gu). I got along well with everyone else, too. I was also close with senior Seo Hye-won (who played So-i).
- Weren't you sad that there was no love line in <Alchemy of Souls>?
▶ That's right. Heo Yun-ok didn't have a love line. She was such a devoted person that she only looked at one person throughout Season 1 and Season 2. In Season 1, we joked that she would end up with the Crown Prince, but in the end, Yun-ok stayed on her own path. It ended with an open ending in the final episode. I think the writer felt a little bad, because although it didn't show who it was, they connected her to someone through a line of dialogue.
- You wore gorgeous hanbok in <Alchemy of Souls>. How was filming a historical drama?
▶ It was very cold in the winter and hot in the summer. Today I wore a traditional hanbok, but for the <Alchemy of Souls> filming, I wore a fusion hanbok. It was quite heavy. The hair ornaments were also very heavy. But because it was difficult, it's more memorable and became a cherished memory.
- You also played a ballerina in KBS 2TV <KBS Drama Special 2022 - Prism>. Did you learn ballet yourself?
▶ Yes, I did. I learn a lot from doing a variety of characters in each project. For Prism, I actually learned ballet and filmed the scenes myself. I learned the basics and the moves for the scene in a short period and then filmed right away. I'm the type of person who builds muscle easily, and I was told that ballet can create unattractive muscles. My ballet teacher told me that. She said it's better for people who build muscle easily not to do ballet. So we parted ways quickly. Haha.
- What kind of work will <Alchemy of Souls> be for you?
▶ It was the project I filmed after my debut work, so it's practically my first. I think it will be remembered as the work that opened the door for me in the career I want to pursue.
- What role would you like to play in the future?
▶ I want to play a character in an extreme situation. In novels, I like criminal psychology. What if I were to play a character with a deep emotional core in a thriller? I think I would grow a lot if I played a character with a deep narrative.
- What is your goal for this year?
▶ I don't really like resting. I think working hard without being idle is a way to repay those who support me. My goal for this year is to work hard.

-올 설 연휴 계획은.
▶명절이라고 모두가 모이는 느낌은 아니고 가족들끼리 하루 정도 저녁먹고 할아버지와 짧은 여행을 간다. 주변에 보니 서울에 계시는 분들도 많은 것 같다. 친척들을 만나면 저에 대한 이야기가 많이 나온다. 제가 배우를 할줄 모르고 계시다가 알게되셔서 응원도 많이 해주신다. 가족들이 1호팬이다. 다 응원해주시니까 너무 좋다.
-명절날 기억에 남는 에피소드가 있나.
▶대가족이 모이지 않아서 딱히 없다. 올해 1월1일에는 가족끼리만 떡국 먹었다. 제가 만두를 좋아해서 만두를 만들어서 먹었다.
-올해가 계묘년인데 토끼상인 듯 하다. 평소에 많이 들었나.
▶토끼나 오리 닮았다는 말을 많이 들었다. 앞머리가 없을 때는 입술이 오리같아서 러버덕 닮았다는 이야기를 많이 들었다. 하하.
-'환혼'을 본 주변 사람들의 반응은 어땠나.
▶파트1때는 단아하고 지고지순했는데 파트2 때는 흑화했다. 파트2때 주인공 장욱을 비롯해 많은 인물이 흑화해서 허윤옥도 그렇게 흑화된거냐는 이야기를 들었다.
-촬영장 분위기는 어땠나.
▶출연 배우 분들이랑 나이가 비슷해서 편하게 지냈다. 선배님들도 편하게 해주셨다. 거리감 없이 친하게 지냈다. 스태프 분들과 장난도 많이 치고 유머 코드가 맞았다.
-극 중 허윤옥과 자신의 싱크로율은.
▶허윤옥은 한 사람만 보고, 여성스러운 면이 많다. 저는 좀 털털한 면도 있다. 여성스러운 느낌보다는 걸크러시 같은 느낌이 좀 있다. 윤옥이는 여성스럽고 단아한 이상향인 것으로 하겠다. 하하.
-걸크러시 같은 느낌을 보다 자세히 말해줄 수 있나.
▶주변에서 여성스럽다는 느낌보다는 털털하다는 이야기를 많이 듣는다. 취미는 올드할 수 있는데 등산을 좋아한다. 또 책을 읽거나 혼자 여행가거나 정적인 것들을 좋아한다. 좀 재미없는 스타일인 것 같다. 물론 친구들과 같이 노는 것을 좋아하고 사람들에 에너지를 많이 받는 스타일이기도 하다.
-'환혼'에서 특히 친해진 배우가 있다면.
▶순이 역의 정지안 언니와 가장 많이 친해졌다. 인수(박당구 역)와도 친해졌다. 나머지는 두루두루 친하게 지냈다. 서혜원 선배님(소이 역)과도 친하게 지냈다.
-'환혼'에서 러브라인이 없었는데 아쉽지는 않았나.
▶맞다. 허윤옥은 러브라인이 없었다. 지고지순한 친구라 시즌1, 시즌2도 쭉 한 사람만 봤다. 시즌1때는 '세자랑 이어질거다'라는 장난을 쳤는데 결국 윤옥이는 한길만 갔다. 마지막 화에서 열린 결말로 끝났다. 작가님이 조금 미안했던지 누구인지는 안 나왔지만 대사로 이어주셨다.
-'환혼'에서도 화려한 한복을 입었다. 사극 촬영은 어땠나.
▶겨울에는 굉장히 춥고 여름에는 덥다. 오늘은 전통 한복을 입었는데, '환혼' 촬영 때는 퓨전 한복을 착용했다. 상당히 무거웠다. 머리 장식도 굉장히 무거웠다. 그래도 힘들었던 만큼 기억에 남고 그만큼 추억도 됐다.
-KBS 2TV '드라마 스페셜 2022 -프리즘'에서 발레리나로 분하기도 했다. 직접 발레를 배웠나.
▶배웠다. 작품을 할 때마다 다양한 캐릭터를 하다보니 뭘 많이 배운다. 프리즘 때도 실제로 발레를 배우고 그 장면은 제가 직접 찍었다. 단기간에 신을 위해서 기본기와 그 동작을 배우고 바로 촬영했다. 저는 근육이 잘 붙는 스타일인데 발레를 하면 근육이 안 예쁘게 잡힌다고 하더라. 그 이야기를 발레 선생님이 해줬다. 근육이 잘 만들어지는 분들은 발레를 안 하는 게 좋다고 했다. 그래서 빨리 헤어졌다. 하하.
